How to preserve aromatic herbs for a long time

The herbs are valuable ingredients in the kitchen. Just knowing how to use them in the right way to enhance the taste of food. But how do you keep them? Here are some tips to preserve the most used aromatic herbs for a long time .

BASIL

Perfect for sauces, sauces for pasta dishes and essential for summer dishes can be stored and used all year round. Just wash the leaves, dab them with absorbent paper, put them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and leave in the fridge for two hours. Then place it in an airtight container or in food bags and insert it into the conger. From this moment on, you can take it in the amount you need throughout the year

PARSLEY

The parsley is good fresh, especially on fish, as it keeps that unmistakable scent with which it enriches the food. But it can also be stored and used as needed: just wash it, shake it from the excess water and chop it without stems, then put it in the fridge on a plate. After about three days it will be dry and ready to be placed in food sachets or in an airtight container.

ORIGAN

The perfect herb for flavoring fish and meat can also be used to enrich salads and cucumbers. You can keep it in the freezer but also in oil if you plan to use it for sauces or hot dishes. Fill the ice trays with oregano leaves without pressing them and fill with extra virgin olive oil to the edge of the trays. Put in the freezer, and when you need to cook just remove the cube and put it in the pan.

ROSEMARY

How to do without rosemary when cooking baked potatoes and hot soups? If you have fresh sprigs of rosemary, you can first dry it and then chop it. You can also pulverize it with a pestle and then store it in hermetically sealed glass jars and use it when needed.

GARLIC

Garlic is a faithful companion of sauces and meats, so tasty you can do without salt during cooking, if accompanied by other spices. It is used daily: how to keep it? Never put the garlic heads in the fridge because the humidity can cause mold. The ideal is to place them in a paper bag of bread in order to protect it from light and moisture. If whole and well preserved they can last for two months.

An ordered terrace, with imagination!

One of the latest trends in furniture is to recycle poor items to get unusual accessories. Pallets, wooden boxes and other objects are transformed with a little imagination and a minimum (but minimum) of dexterity, finding new life and a new function.

I have often been tempted to get to work, but the home style has nothing to do with a recycled furniture. So? I do not give up, and I finally order the terrace , where plants and gardening tools, lanterns and outdoor accessories are starting to get the better of them.

And the design of a cabinet made of wooden boxes is cheap, requires little effort and satisfies my desire for creativity . Depending on the available space you can decide whether to make it develop in height, or in width, or even give it a more dynamic, chess-like shape, overlapping the boxes with fantasy.

needed:

  • Fruit boxes (prefer those that are more robust and not too light);
  • Sand paper;
  • Spray paint cans suited to the exterior of the chosen color (I choose bright colors and all different that also like children, but there are those who prefer a more shabby style, choosing an antique white or a pale gray);
  • Pattex Millechiodi Water Resistant to fix the modules of the cabinet and fix the composition to the wall;

Method:

Choose the boxes and overlap them to form the piece of furniture : by doing more tests, you can understand what is best for you. Now, if you want to capture the project, take a picture, or a sketch, so you do not have doubts during the work.

Sift the wooden boxes , trying to eliminate the wood chips and trying to smooth the surface as much as possible. At this point, the cassettes are ready to be painted.

Arrange the sheets of newspaper on the terrace and lay the first cassette on the ground: spray the spray-paint on the various modules and let it dry well , proceeding with a second coat. Once the color base is dry, you can decide whether to decorate the cabinet by painting it or, if you want to achieve a shabby chic effect, further sand the cover.

When all the boxes are dry, proceed to the composition of the cabinet, using Pattex Millechiodi Water Resistant  and let it dry well . At this point the cabinet is ready to be fixed to the wall of the terrace. Let it dry again this time and … here it is! Now the terrace no longer looks like a green battlefield!

Renew the kitchen knobs

Sometimes a simple gesture can renew the appearance of an environment , have you ever noticed? For example, changing kitchen knobs, which may be broken or old, can give furniture that fresh air you’ve been looking for.

But changing the knobs means finding new ones that fit perfectly with the holes in the previous ones , not to mention the interlocking ones that usually leave a chasm on the door. How to solve this problem without spending a fortune and having to make further holes? The solution is low cost and covers every kind of sign left by previous knobs.

The need:

  • plastic rods about 2 cm wide;
  • bridges for metal pipes;
  • modeling paste for air curing;
  • Pattex All with One;
  • color spray paint of your choice;
  • paper to protect the table;
  • strong adhesive tape;
  • cutter;
  • sand paper.

The first thing to do is to measure the space that we have to cover, that is, the distance between the holes in the door, then we will cut pieces of rod with a sufficient length to cover them. Using the sandpaper we round the edges, leaving them smooth.

With Pattex All with One glue the bridges to the center of the pieces of rod , taking care not to let the adhesive out at the sides. To cover the holes on the bridges we will make fake screws with the modeling paste, in a very simple way: a flattened ball with a mark in the middle made with the cutter. Glue the false screws with a bit of adhesive on each hole and let it dry for 24 hours. We paint with the chosen color, taking care to uniformly cover the entire knob, also on the inside. Leave to dry according to the times indicated on the can.

To glue the new knobs we have to do is put a little ‘sticker on the back and place on the door, doing a little’ pressure. While the adhesive dries we reinforce with a bit of tape, after 24 hours we can take it off and our low-cost knobs will be ready !

Marivi Trombeta

Who is Marivi Trombeta? Marivi are us, Cintia (the brunette) and Verónica (the blonde), two Argentine sisters (and here is explained that thing with the straw in the picture, which is called mate) with one foot in Italy (the blackberry) and the other in Spain (the blonde). Since we remember creativity is our driving force, but over the years we have expressed it in a thousand different ways, without being able to give it a precise and exclusive address. After the age of thirty, with different careers and professions behind us, we said … “But do we really have to choose?”. And it was then that Marivi was born, our alter ego that brings together all of our multiple personalities.

Pressure cooker: how to use it, cooking times and useful tips

Do not you notice anything strange in these cooking times? They are incredibly short ! Yes, because they are cooking times in pressure cookers , greatly reduced thanks to the high temperatures that are generated and the fact that there is little heat loss. In addition to allowing significant savings in time and energy , the pressure cooker has the advantage of partially preserving the nutrients of food , because if it is true that the higher temperatures will favor the destruction and, in fact,the steam and the reduction of cooking times allow to preserve many .

The first prototypes of the pressure cooker date back to the second half of the seventeenth century, but the commercialization of the first models began only in the fifties . Over time the design has undergone some tweaking, but the original structure has not been turned upside down : it is a pot with very thick walls and a hermetically sealed lid equipped with valves for the escape of steam. There are models of various capacities: 3-5 liters, 6-8 liters, 10-12 liters . For lunches and dinners of every entity!

Not sure how to use the pressure cooker?Have you ever thought of buying one to speed up the preparation of your tasty dishes ? Here is a small guide for you that will be very useful for you !

How to use the pressure cooker?

Pour a small amount of water into the pressure cooker – from half a glass to 2 glasses, depending on the type of food and its quantity – and in any case never fill it more than two thirds of its height, because the food inside is cooked mainly thanks to the action of steam . After adding the food to be cooked, make sure to close the lid properly and make sure the valves are in the correct position, otherwise the pressure will not increase inside, and turn the stove on.

Cook over high heat until the pot has reached the right pressure and temperature. How do you notice it? Simple, the steam will come out of the valve emitting the classic hiss. At this point lower the flame and start to calculate the cooking time. When cooked, before opening the lid you will have to open the pressure cooker valve manually to release all the steam and bring the pressure back to normal levels. Alternatively, you can wait for the steam to come out autonomously and the pressure decreases until the valve is spontaneously released, but remember that in the meantime the food will tend to continue cooking.

Pressure cookers: prices for every need

Today, even more technological versions with a timer display are added to the classic pressure cookers ; prices, therefore, vary considerably, and not only in relation to the capacity. The cost of traditional pressure cookers ranges from 50-60 euros in smaller ones , up to 80-100 euros in larger ones. In pressure cookers with displays , prices range from 140-160 euros to 180-200 euros for the most capacious models.

How to clean the aluminum of the coffee maker

The cup of coffee and the coffee pot are two of the objects that most represent Italians and Italy in the world ; moreover – in many homes – coffee is a real ritual that is not renounced, either after lunch or at other times of the day. It is easy to guess, therefore, how the coffee maker is one of the most widely used tools in the kitchen and it is inevitable that it needs maintenance . At this point – however – the question becomes thorny: there are two different currents of thought , obviously opposed as often happens in Italy (Guelphs against Ghibellines, right against left, more against blondes etc.). Buthow to clean the aluminum of the coffee pot ?

The first of these currents claims that the aluminum coffee maker should only be rinsed and not cleaned : it is precisely the absence of cleaning to give the coffee its unmistakable flavor . On the opposite barricade the other current of thought : the coffee pot must necessarily be cleaned , it goes to the hygiene of the kitchen and the health of those who use it. If you belong to the second school of thought, here are some suggestions on how to clean the aluminum of the coffee maker effectively .

Therecleaning the outside of the coffee maker is simple: a soft sponge isenough , not to scratch it, and a product to make aluminum shiny, such as Sidol for metals. When rubbing, you will need a little more elbow grease at the bottom, which will be blackened by the flame of the stove. For the inside , including filter and gasket, more attention is needed instead .

To remove any incrustations present you can rely on natural remedies . If the filter has particularly hard deposits to remove, you can soak it in a container with boiling water and a glass of vinegar , leaving it to act for half an hour. At the end of the procedure, you can wash it with a dish detergent like Nelsen Limone, which degreases the internal surfaces of the coffee maker.

Finally the gasket : before cleaning it, check that it is not deformed – since in this case it will have to be replaced – otherwise proceed with the cleaning by rubbing the rubber with a cloth and a little detergent or alternatively vinegar . Both solutions are valid for eliminating coffee residues.
